Zhone -
Bringing Triple Play to the Mainstream
Zhone's triple play solution combines Access, Transport, CPE and Management functions in an open, standards-based system that ensures scalability, interoperability, and functionality.
We have fully integrated our triple play architecture with market-leading head-end and middleware systems, for an end-to-end triple play solution that is simpler, more cost-effective, and easier to deploy than any previous solution.
There is a significant gap between access systems that claim to be "video capable" and those that actually deliver the full range of capabilities needed for commercial deployments.
Zhone delivers the complete solution, with the following key features:
- Integrated: Access, Transport, CPE, and Management integrated into a single platform
- Scalable and flexible deployment options: from Central Office to low-density pole mounts, maximizing subscriber reach and minimizing costly remote terminal retrofits
- Advanced IP functionality, using fully distributed IGMP proxy for IP multicast
- High-Performance Transport, with integrated Gigabit-Ethernet RPR or SONET
- All-in-one Zhone Residential Gateway, which eliminates the need for Set-Top Boxes and costly home rewiring

Built-In Video Performance
IGMP for multicast is to IP video what dial tone is to POTS. Zhone is the first to optimize IGMP performance by fully distributing IGMP processing and control in the access network. With IGMP proxy, multicast can be performed at the access node rather than at a centralized router. As a result channel changing is fast and consistent and scalability of the network is vastly simplified and made more reliable.
MALC and Raptor
Zhone's MALC is a fully featured Packet Loop Carrier, optimized for the delivery of voice, data, and video services over a pure packet access network. Based on an ultra-high performance backplane with modular subscriber and transport interface options, the MALC greatly simplifies greenfield triple play deployments, yet offers significant migration support for existing networks.
Zhone's Raptor DSLAM provides all of the functionality of the MALC except POTS termination, providing cost savings in DSL overlay networks. The compact Raptor 100 provides complete DSL triple play support in a 1 RU high system.
High-Performance / High-Efficiency Transport
The MALC supports both Ethernet and SONET/SDH transport, giving network operators the flexibility to leverage existing ATM networks or to deploy IP networks for more efficient delivery of video services. The Ethernet transport supports 2.5 Gigabit Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) from a dual fiber uplink. Gig-E with RPR is the ideal choice for reliable and efficient transport of VoD and other session-based streaming media.
For Metro / Regional networks Zhone's GigaMux family of xWDM optical transport products offer scalable fiber gain for high-bandwidth services, such as Video on Demand (VoD). |
